Lincolnshire lost 9½-6½ to Essex in the ECF semi final. Essex fielded a very strong side and were favourite to win at the start of the match but the Lincolnshire team put up a good fight and if some of the games had gone in our favour it could have been a different story. Full results
The next Peterborough Rapidplay will be held on Saturday 22nd June 2013. This is a 6-round rapidplay event with cash prizes, in a comfortable environment with hot & cold food served all day. Please visit the website for further details and to enter online.
The quickplay was won by Samuel Milson with a score of 5½/6. He received £100 prize money and the Alf Newman Shield. Full results
The Lincolnshire County Championships will be held on 20-21 July at The Atrium, Lindum Business Park in North Hykeham, Lincoln. This year the event is being run by Peter Sherlock so please make cheques payable to the Lincolnshire Chess Association. An entry form can be downloaded for those interested in taking part.
Lincolnshire beat Gloucestershire 10½-5½ in the ECF quarter final and will now face Essex in the semi final. Full results
Two Lincolnshire players took part in the Open section. David Coates (Lincoln) scored 3/5 and Daniel Pousada Garcia (Lincolnshire) scored 1½/4.
Five Lincolnshire players took part in the Cambridgeshire Rapidplay and they all competed in the challengers section. John Grasham (Louth) scored 3½/5 and won a £30 grading prize. The results for the other Lincolnshire players are as follows: William Orr (Horncastle) 2/5, Paul Fischer (Lincoln) 1½/5, Luke Tooth (Stamford) 1½/5 and Nicholas Lees (Stamford) 1/5.
The e2e4 Nottingham Congress will be held at the Park Inn, Mansfield Road, Nottingham on 10-12 May 2013. Full details are online at www.e2e4.org.uk. It is a 5 round FIDE rated event. You can enter online and there are special rates available for players staying at the Park Inn.

The next Cambridgeshire Rapidplay will be on Sunday 21st April in Peterborough. There are three tournaments, catering for players of all standards, and an increased prize fund this year. There is an excellent venue, with plenty of room for players and spectators, and sandwiches and light refreshments will be available. An entry form is available to download. The Alf Newman Quickplay Chess Tournament will take place this year on Saturday 1st June at Church House in Louth. The tournament is always very well attended by Lincolnshire Chess players of all ages and abilities and there is always something to play for. An entry form is available to download. Dave Bull (Lincoln) came equal 1st in the minor section with a score of 5/6 and won £58.33 in prize money.
Lincolnshire beat Derbyshire 11½-4½ to secure the MCCU Minor Counties title. They now advance to the national quarter final stage where they will be drawn to play against a team from the West of England Chess Union. Full results

Lincolnshire lost 8-4 to Staffordshire despite playing their strongest team so far. The team suffered some early defeats and were unable to pull back the score. Full results
The new ECF grading list is now online. This is the mid season list based on games played up to 31st December 2012. The active lincolnshire players list has also been updated.
David Coates (Lincoln) played very well in the Open section and came equal 2nd with a score of 4½/6. Also playing in the Open section was Stephen Prior (Grantham) and he scored 3½/6. In the Minor section Bill Egan (Scunthorpe) also scored 3½/6.
Lincolnshire were comprehensively beaten 9½-2½ by Warwickshire. There were a couple of good wins for the team but overall it was a disappointing result. Full results
On Thursday 3rd January, Horncastle will be starting up a new chess club. It will take place at The Bull Hotel, The Bull Ring, Horncastle, LN9 5HU at 7pm. A regular ECF graded 6 round Rapidplay (including a junior only event) in Peterborough will be commencing on Sat 9th February 2013. The main Rapidplay will consist of 3 graded sections - Minor (u130), Major (u170) and Open. The Junior Rapidplay is for Under 16's, whose grade is less than 85 (ECF). There were a few Lincolnshire players that made the trip up to Leeds for the British Rapidplay. In the open section Sam Milson (Louth) scored 4/11. In the intermediate section his sister Amy also scored 4/11. In the minor section Neil Milson (Louth) scored 5½/11 and Paul Fischer (Lincoln) scored 5/11.
Stephen Prior (Grantham) scored 3½/5 and David Coates (Lincoln) scored 3/5 in this congress which had one section for all players under 2200.

Lincolnshire won a hard earned point with a 6-6 draw against Nottinghamshire. It wasn't looking good early on with several quick defeats for the county team but they fought back in the later stages to level the match. Full results

There was plenty of success for Lincolnshire players at Scarborough this year with several getting into the prize money. Amy Milson (Louth) came equal first place in the minor section with a score of 4/5 and won £112. In the foundation section, Bill Egan (Scunthorpe) came 3rd with a score of 4/5 and won £63. There were a couple of grading prizes won - Steve Allott (Grimsby) won a grading prize of £31 in the intermediate section with a score of 3½/5 and Ian Palmer (Lincolnshire) won a grading prize of £16.33 in the foundation section with a score of 3/5. The U120 team got off to a poor start to the season with a 9½-2½ loss to Worcestershire. A new addition to the team was Neelay Sant, a promising junior player, who won on board 8 after his opponent blundered. Full results
Lincolnshire started the season with a convincing 12½-3½ win over Worcestershire. Worcestershire were outgraded by an average of 10 points each board so the scoreline was not a surprise. Full results
The Lincolnshire County Championship which is scheduled to take place at the Lindum Group Atrium on 13-14 July 2013 will require players to have only a Bronze level of membership. Here is a brief overview of the levels of ECF membership:

Pandoras Box Grantham are looking in to the posibility of entering a 2nd team into the 4NCL for the 2012-13 season. They currently run a team in Division 2 and would like to field a team in Division 3. The matches are played over weekends and are FIDE rated. If you are interested in playing for either team then please contact Nigel Birtwistle.
The Lincolnshire Chess Association AGM will take place on September 8th at 2pm, with the fixture meeting beforehand at 12.30pm. An agenda is available to download.
