Report from Keith Palmer
Here is a brief summary of the teams' achievement on the day:
Under 11 Team - Finished in 3rd position
This was the toughest section and our players found it difficult to take points form the experienced Notts and Northants players. Many games, especially on the top boards, lasted for well over an hour and it was only in the latter stages that our players were edged out. A special thank you to Isaac Towndrow, Asa Monahan, Connor Wilson and Sidherth Rakhee, under 9 reserve players who stepped in to fill the lower Under 11 boards (Isaac winning two of his three games!).
Under 11 Girls Team - Finished in 3rd position
The girls in our team gained confidence in each round. They won 2.5 out of 12 in the first round, 3 out of 12 in the second and 6.5 out of 12 in the third. Four of the girls Abigail Harvey, Ruby Lidgard, Yasmin Hughes and Joanna Hoyle scored 2 out of three in their games.
Under 9 Team - Finished in 4th position
Our Under 9 team had by far the best results of the day, but because of the number and quality of county teams taking part in the section, finished just outside of the medal positions. they scored 5.5 out of 12 in the first round and 6.5 out of 12 in the last, but the second round lost them valuable places when they went down 3.5 out of 12. Ben Cain and Jamie Nel were unbeaten with 3/3 and 2.5/3 respectively and Joseph Saunders and Ewan Rodell also impressed with 2/3 each.
I have mentioned a few notable performances above, but this was a team event and all members performed important roles in the team, several holding the higher boards and playing extremely impressive chess but ultimately without reward, and of course their contributions are just as important. So a big thank you to all of our players.
